In Memoriam

In Memoriam fundraising is a sensitive area for charities, however it is a reliable and growing source of income that has the added benefit of meeting a supporter’s need to mark the passing of someone with a tribute of some kind.

How does it work?
It is increasingly popular to make charitable gifts to mark the death of someone close to us with gifts in lieu of flowers at funerals or a more considered gift relevant to the deceased – maybe a life passion or cause of death (donation to a cancer charity, sports club, animal welfare for example) – or maybe a more permanent memorial.

What we think
Building an appropriate In Memoriam fundraising programme requires care and planning, and the support of colleagues from across the charity. Trustees and service-delivery colleagues can be skeptical, however all experience shows that supporters become very attached to supporting a charity through In Memoriam or Tribute fundraising.

You don’t have to be a cause-of-death charity to benefit from In Memoriam fundraising. Heritage, animal welfare, arts, education, environment, religious causes, all can benefit from providing their supporters with a scheme to remember loved ones.
